The Jatropha curcas is not subjected to the same demand pressures as the food oils and are grown on non-essential land. Jatropha is one of many plants that hold a great deal of promise. It is also crucial that supplies of alternative, non edible vegetable oils be ensured for sustainable production of biodiesel. The key to the future of Biodiesel is exploring inexpensive feed stocks that can be grown by farmers on marginal agricultural. The transesterification process removes and breaks larger and more viscous vegetable oil molecules that do not combust well in modern diesel engines. Biodiesel is made from the transesterification of vegetable oils and also called as methyl ester of vegetable oil (VOME) or fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). Biodiesel is a new industry, but it is rapidly becoming an integral part of the global renewable energy scenario. Global demand for biodiesel is increasing rapidly due to international energy and environmental policies. Compared to regular diesel, pure biodiesel (B100) produces a 73% reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions, a 67% reduction in unburned hydrocarbons, a 48% reduction in carbon monoxide, a 47% reduction in particulate matter, a 100% reduction in sulphur oxide emissions, and an 80% reduction in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can cause cancer and emphysema. In both its pure and blended forms, biodiesel reduces the emissions of air toxins, CO2, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and black smoke from engines/vehicles. Biodiesel can be used either as a substitute for conventional diesel, or as an additive. In North Dakota and Minnesota, all diesel fuel is required to include 2% biodiesel. In the U.S., a blend of 20% biodiesel with 80% petro-diesel (referred to as B20) is quite widely used, and 15 states have passed legislation favorable to biodiesel. Many European car manufacturers, including VW and Mercedes Benz, have approved biodiesel use for their engines. Biodiesel is now the fastest growing alternative fuel in Europe. Since its first production on a commercial scale in Germany, in 1991, global biodiesel production has increased rapidly. Biodiesel is a safe, non-toxic, biodegradable and renewable fuel that can be easily used in unmodified diesel engines, and a variety of other applications.
